The International Committee on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) celebrates the International Day for Monuments and Sites on April 18 every year. But since that falls on a Friday, the Heritage Conservation Society will join the celebration by organizing a Manila parks and plazas tour on Saturday, April 19, 2008.

With the theme religious heritage in mind, we realize that many of our parks and plazas are found in front of churches and have been a center of life of our historic districts. Take note, dear friends, that the Manila parks and plazas tour will not take you to any pretty tourist destination. You will see no Golden Shower trees, nor amethyst Banabas nor raging vermillion Caballeros or Fire trees. Will we see fountains, outstanding monuments, public art work? Who knows?

The tour is for the adventurous and the curious, for those who have a passion for discovering things about the capital of this country. In all Manila, there are 75 parks and plazas of various sizes and shapes some of which have already disappeared even before you got to see them.

The tour is co-sponsored by the Manila Historical and Heritage Commission, the City Planning Office of Manila and the Manila Tourism Office.

Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim will be happy to receive your comments and observations about these places so he can do whatever is possible to improve and enhance the city's parks and plazas

Meeting place is at the Freedom Triangle of Manila City Hall (the one with the flag pole) enter Arroceros St. (now A. Villegas) directly under the LRT, at 8:00 a.m. The tour will end at around 1 pm. Contact HCS at 5212239 for slots.
